COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — U.S. Rep. James Clyburn says religious freedom laws being passed in a number of states are just as wrong as laws that allowed racial segregation a century ago if they allow people to discriminate.
Clyburn said Wednesday that he has watched too many laws being passed and decided it was time to speak out.
Clyburn also talked about financial problems at South Carolina State University, where he graduated in 1962. He says the school's main problem is poor management.
The state's lone congressional Democrat says he's raised $1.2 million for SC State's endowment through his golf tournament and other events and given $70,000 in money from speeches and other appearance fees to a scholarship fund.
The 74-year-old Clyburn says he is healthy and hasn't figured out when he might retire.
