An Aiken man tried to attack his ex-girlfriend's fiance with a knife, which resulted in a brief standoff with police late Tuesday, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
Stefano Al Spann, 49, of Gregory Road, was charged with second-degree assault and battery and placed in the Aiken County detention center, where he remained Wednesday morning.
Spann called his ex-girlfriend to get his medicine from her home, and she told him to come to her workplace to get the medicine, according to an incident report. Spann "refused" and showed up at her home on Aldrich Street about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. His ex-girlfriend was not home but her fiance was, and when he opened the door, Spann pushed his way through the door and into the kitchen, grabbed a knife and charged the victim.
Spann chased the victim outside, yelling, "I'm going to kill you," the report states. The victim ran to a vehicle in the driveway and locked himself inside. Spann tried to get into the car but eventually went back into the home, where two juvenile females were inside.
Officers arrived and tried unsuccessfully to challenge Spann when he opened the door, but he retreated back into the home, police said. The two girls "were able to get out of the residence without incident," but the report doesn't indicate whether Spann released them.
Aiken Public Safety's special response team assumed control of the situation. Spann refused to come out of the home, and was continuously moving to a window to watch officers and bystanders, police said. He again opened the door to yell at officers.
Spann's mother arrived and tried unsuccessfully to talk him out, the report states. An officer was finally able to get a good vantage point and deploy an electronic control weapon, but Spann shut the door, stopping the probes. The officer then delivered a "drive stun" to him, and were able to take him into custody.
