Aiken Department of Public Safety officers responded to a reported shoplifting at the York Street Dollar General on April 8.

Officers were told that a male suspect had been attempting to hurry a female suspect out of the store. When approached by officers, the male, identified as Timothy Bevell, seemed "very nervous ... He was sweating heavily and appeared to be very jittery," the report states.

The store employee told officers the female suspect, identified as Mary Bevell, was in the store, attempting to replace the shoplifted merchandise.

The store employee said she had seen Mary Bevell conceal merchandise in her purse and attempt to leave the store.

She was charged with shoplifting and arrested. During an arrest search, the officer found a pill bottle containing what appeared to be methamphetamine in her purse. Bevell refused to answer questions, and also was charged with possession of methamphetamine.

The officer speaking with Timothy Williams at the vehicle outside the store placed him in investigative detention, and then noticed a child in the vehicle move a blue zip-up case with what appeared to be a butter knife sticking out of it. The officer removed the case and found syringes, burnt spoons, lighters and other objects commonly used for making methamphetamine, the report says.

A search of the car revealed another, similar case.

Timothy Bevell said he did not know his wife was shoplifting and knew nothing of the drugs or paraphernalia, according to police.

When Bevell was asked if he had anything illegal or that would stick the officer, he reached for his right pocket, but was stopped by the officer.

The officer searched Bevell and found a syringe, marijuana and a blue, diamond-shape pill, determined to be Viagra.

Timothy Bevell was charged with simple possession of marijuana.

The couple was taken to the Aiken County detention center but have since been released.
