Nuclear group offers summer program for teachers

The Citizens for Nuclear Technology Awareness and various other groups have created a way for 25 teachers to learn more about nuclear technology applications.

According to a press release, the group will hold the three-day Southeastern Summer Nuclear Institute from July 15 to 17. The cost is $50 and will include $50 in gift cards. The last day to register is May 15.

Attendees will receive educational resources, including a DVD with the workshop presentations and reference materials, teacher's guides and outreach materials from the American Nuclear Society and a certificate of completion. Housing for the institute will be available at USC Aiken, and all meals will be provided.

Clint Wolfe, the executive director of the nuclear group, wrote that the itinerary is widely varied. Events include a tour of Georgia Power's Vogtle nuclear power station in Burke County with visits to the control room, simulator exercises and meetings with nuclear power reactor personnel.

A tour of the Savannah River Site, including waste management facilities and briefings on activities at the Savannah River National Laboratory, also is on the agenda.

At USCA, classroom workshops will emphasize on atomic and nuclear fundamentals, power-generation fundamentals, nuclear-technology applications and workforce opportunities. Hands-on activities will illustrate important technical concepts and scientific principles which the teachers can use in their classrooms, Wolfe wrote.

"The key goal is to promote student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education and related careers," he added.

Other sponsoring partners of the institute include Georgia Power, the SRS Community Reuse Organization, American Nuclear Society, AREVA, USCA, SUNRISE Universities and Energy Solutions.
