Aiken County Council will ask the public to fly flags at half-staff to honor and recognize the community's law enforcement officers.
The request is part of Council's 7 p.m. public meeting today held in the Aiken County Government Center's Council Chambers, 1930 University Parkway.
On Friday, May 15, the community will honor Aiken County law enforcement agencies who "play an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens and our community," the agenda states, including those who have lost their lives in the service or have become disabled during duty.
The day is also for residents to understand the duties, responsibilities, hazards and sacrifices of their law enforcement officers, and also so that law enforcement officers "recognize their duty to serve the people of this community by protecting them against violence and disorder."
The resolution is particularly timely after 25-year-old New York City Police Department officer Brian Moore was pronounced dead Monday after being shot while sitting in an unmarked vehicle Saturday in Queens.
In other business, Council will vote on the second of three votes whether to approve a proposed amendment to the Aiken County Official Zoning and Development District Atlas to rezone 7 acres, located at the corner of Three Runs Plantation Drive and Dasher Circle.
The current use of the property includes a horse-riding area and vacant area, and the proposed use of the property includes a horse-riding area and neighborhood fitness center.
