Aiken County is without a finance director for now, but County Administrator Clay Killian said officials are in the process of hiring someone new.

The announcement of that vacancy came out during Council's Tuesday work session, after Assistant County Administrator Brian Sanders handed Council members an up to date version of the County's vacancy report.

The position was held by former Finance Director Tammy Strange. Killian confirmed Strange was no longer with the County, and the position has been open for a little more than a week.

Council unanimously approved opening up that vacancy, which also included opening the vacancies for a public relations coordinator and a bailiff in the Clerk of Court's Office.

In other news, the Aiken County community is asked to fly their flags at half-staff Friday, May 15, after Council unanimously proclaimed the day as "Peace Officers' Memorial Day.

The day will commemorate and honor Aiken County law enforcement agencies who "play an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens and our community," the agenda states, including those who have lost their lives on duty or have become disabled during their service.

The day is also for residents to better understand the responsibilities, duties, hazards and sacrifices of their law enforcement officers, while law enforcement are asked to recognize their role in serving the Aiken County community.
