If you are a runner, you are wanted by the police - but for a good cause.
The inaugural Aiken County Sheriff's Office Jail Break 5K will be held May 16 at the Langley Pond Loop Trail, with check-in from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. The 5K will begin at 9 a.m.
Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female runners, and free T-shirts will be given to participants.
All proceeds will benefit the Children's Advocacy Center of Aiken County. The mission of the center is to provide a safe environment and supportive services to promote healing to abused children and their families through intervention, treatment and prevention.
"We were trying to figure out what we can do to give back to local charity in the community," said Sgt. Jason Feemster, a spokesman for the Sheriff's Office. "Then we thought about doing a 5K, and the name 'jail break.' It's a good event to do; we have a lot of runners in the CSRA."
The registration cost is $25 through May 9, and $35 after. Participants also can register on the day of the race.
The 5K will run along a point-to-point course along the northern shore of Langley Pond. Competitors will start the race entering a cluster of trees and wildlife, and the trail consists of numerous curves, hills and various terrain. The final half mile will be a downhill slope with a disc jockey motivating runners to cross the finish line.
Participants can register at bit.ly/1crR01m.
