Beaufort teen accused of killing man on basketball court

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — Police have charged a 17-year-old in the fatal shooting of a man on a basketball court.

The Beaufort Gazette reports the teen-age boy was arrested Sunday morning in the death of 20-year-old Matthew Horne. Police say Horne was shot and killed April 30 on the court across from the Charles Lind Brown Activity Center.

Police say the suspect in the shooting had also been arrested May 4 and charged with interfering with a police officer. They said he also pleaded guilty to receiving stolen goods valued at $10,000 or more last year in separate cases.

The teen is being held at Beaufort County Detention Center and charged with murder. It is unclear if he has a lawyer.

Search continues for man who ambushed, shot SC deputy

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) Witness statements say the sheriff's deputy shot in the head in a gas station lot was ambushed by a man carrying a strange package who appeared out of the adjoining woods.

Police reports following the shooting of Berkeley County Sheriff's Lt. Will Rogers late Thursday say the law officer was shot in the back of the head, but was conscious and alert when help arrived.

One witness and surveillance video identified the gunman as wearing a mask, dark pants and a white, long-sleeved shirt. He was carrying a red bag.

A witness told authorities the shooter appeared from the woods next to the Moncks Corner gas station where Rogers had stopped and fired three bullets from a silver revolver as the deputy stood outside his vehicle.

Residents of SC Muslim village see threats, seek assurance

YORK, S.C. (AP) — Residents of a Muslim enclave in South Carolina want to meet with law enforcement authorities to discuss suspicious activity and their worries of potential attack.

The Herald of Rock Hill reports that residents of Holy Islamville outside York are set to meet with law officers as early as Monday.

Islamville has dozens of homes, a school and a mosque.

FBI wiretaps from agents in South Carolina recently uncovered a potential scheme to target Muslims for attack.

Islamville Mayor Ramadan Sayeed Shakir says in recent weeks people have thrown crosses onto the property after holding a silent demonstration outside the gates. He says passersby have shouted racial and religious slurs for years.

A York man last year pleaded guilty to firing guns near Islamville and was fined $500.
