COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Several dozen workers are losing their jobs in South Carolina as Blue Bell closes its distribution center in Lexington County.
Local media outlets report that the center is located in Red Bank near Interstate 20 and opened in 2006. The company says each of its distribution centers has between 30 and 50 workers.
Paul Kruse, the president and CEO of the Texas company, announced on Friday that about 1,400 full- and part-time workers are losing their jobs nationwide.
The Texas-based company announced the layoffs following a series of listeria illnesses linked to its ice cream that prompted a nationwide recall of Blue Bell products.
