Lydle preparing for retirement by putting Camera Center up for sale

Chris' Camera Center in downtown Aiken has survived the transition from film to digital images, the growing popularity of smartphones that take photographs and competition from big-box stores and online retailers.

It's an accomplishment that owner Chris Lydle is proud of, but now he's ready to call it quits. Earlier this month, Lydle went public with his plan to sell the Camera Center, which is on Laurens Street.

Aiken Department of Public Safety awards top officers, employees

The Aiken Department of Public Safety celebrated its top officers and employees Thursday night at Newberry Hall.

Penny Schultz was named Officer of the Year, and Takima Butler won the award for Rookie of the Year.

"(Butler) started in May of 2013 and was assigned to the B-shifts," said Aiken Department of Public Safety Lt. Karl Odenthal. "In a short time, she has become an active member and was selected to join the Honor Guard."

Attendees salute success of Aiken Memorial Day parade

Local veterans groups said earlier this week that South Carolina only had three Memorial Day parades left in the entire state.

That is why Bill Burdick drove his family more than 80 miles on Saturday, parked his truck on Park Avenue - about a block up from where he parked last year - and waved at all of the bands, local officials and veterans who marched in Aiken's parade.

Haislip family unveils and dedicates Suites on Laurens

Birthdays come and go on a regular basis, but Det Haislip's 62nd on Friday was more special than most.

The Aiken businessman and his family unveiled the results of a major renovation project that created four New York City-style loft apartments above their True Value Hardware and Appliances on Laurens Street.

St. John's Methodist dedicates new Faith Center in Aiken

Five months ago, young couple Eric and Tiffani Wachtman moved to Aiken with their baby daughter, Isabella, hoping to find a modern church service like the one they left in Florida.

They found just what they were looking for at St. John's United Methodist Church in downtown Aiken.

St. John's added a modern, contemporary service and music about eight years ago, and on Sunday, consecrated its new Faith Center on the campus.
