A man accused of robbing an Aiken auto-sales business at knife point will head to trial on Monday.

Waymon Eugene Newton, 37, was charged with armed robbery and kidnapping after an October 2014 incident.

Dispatch received a call Oct. 8, 2014, that a vehicle crashed on Talatha Church Road at Whiskey Road, according to past Aiken Standard reports.

The driver was seen running away, according to reports.

Police later determined that the description of the driver matched the description of the man involved in an armed robbery at Bryant's Auto Sales on Whiskey Road on Sept. 30, 2014, according to a press release.

An employee of the business was robbed at knife point by a man who said he was interested in buying a vehicle, and who was later identified as Newton, police said.

According to Second Circuit Solicitor Strom Thurmond, the trial is set for Monday, and jury selection is set to begin at 2 p.m.

Newton has remained incarcerated at the Aiken County detention center since his arrest last year, according to detention center reports.

Will Whaley is the crime and court reporter for the Aiken Standard. He is a native of Fayette, Alabama, and graduated from the University of North Alabama with a degree in journalism.
