Candice Scott said she's not really part of any organization. In fact, she said she's just an ordinary mom that wants what's best for her community.
But in a quiet, yet effective manner, Scott is responsible for an annual event that incorporates a balance of safety and life lessons with food, fun and a water party for the neighborhood kids.
Saturday, Scott's fifth annual safety walk started with a parade in the community surrounding Governor Aiken Neighborhood Park. The kids heard about the importance of safety, being good citizens and entrusting in law enforcement.
Afterward, the kids enjoyed food, games and the main event - Aiken Public Safety attaching a hose to the fire hydrant on the corner and spraying water in high-arching streams on kids in their bathing suits.
Scott said the event is to bring awareness of safety to the kids to kick off the summer break.
"We want to keep them away from dangerous traffic, bad influences, drugs ... everything," she said. "It's just something I started after seeing all of these kids being out here during the summer with nothing to do."
Scott's daughter, Lexi Bell, said she's happy her mom set the event up back in 2011. Watching the event grow each year has been special for the whole family, Bell said.
"We just have fun every year, hanging out with our friends" she said.
Involving Public Safety was a key part of the event's success, Scott added. Officer Rock Brown agreed with Scott, stating the main focus of the event is the walk, which he said is more like a small parade where kids made their own posters encouraging each other to stay away from drugs and violence.
He added that bringing the truck to spray the water over the street for the kids is always the favorite part for the kids.
"It's a good time for everyone, and I'm glad (Scott) has stuck with it and included Public Safety," Brown said.
