One person is dead and another is in custody after a shooting occurred in New Ellenton on Thursday night.

Brana Vaughn, 36, was pronounced dead at her Cooper Drive home at about 10:30 p.m., according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

Edward Vaughn, 38, was arrested and transported to the Aiken County detention center where he remained Friday morning. Charges are pending.

Carlton stated in his press release that she was the "victim of a shooting incident allegedly perpetrated by her husband Edward Vaughn."

The incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. Witnesses on scene said they heard multiple gunshots.

New Ellenton and Jackson police officers as well as Aiken County Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene.

The shooting is being investigated by the Aiken County Sheriff's Office and the Aiken County Coroner's Office.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning in Newberry.

The Aiken Standard spoke to one family member of the victim, who said she heard Brana Vaughn was shot four times in the chest area.

According to the family, although the couple was married, they had been separated for a period of time, but "never had problems."
