A man was charged with murder Friday after the fatal shooting of his wife in New Ellenton.

Edward Douglas Vaughn II, 38, of New Ellenton, was arrested and transported to the Aiken County detention center Thursday, where he remained Friday morning. By Friday afternoon, a warrant was obtained and Vaughn was charged with murder, said Aiken County Sheriff's Office Capt. Eric Abdullah.

Brana Vaughn, 36, was pronounced dead at her Cooper Drive home at about 10:30 p.m., according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

Aiken County deputies arrived to the scene of the shooting incident at 10:06 p.m.

The subject met deputies at the front door of the Cooper Drive residence with his hands up and said he had "had enough," according to an Aiken County Sheriff's Office report.

When deputies entered the home, they found the victim on the kitchen floor, according to the report.

New Ellenton first responders attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful.

Four other people were in the home at the time of the shooting, including two teenagers, one child and an infant, according to the report. No other injuries were reported.

Witnesses on scene told the Aiken Standard that they heard multiple gunshots. A witness also told investigators that the shooting occurred during a verbal dispute.

The Aiken Standard spoke to a family member of the victim, who said she heard Brana Vaughn was shot four times in the chest area.

According to the family, although the couple was married, they had been separated for a period of time, but "never had problems."

New Ellenton and Jackson police officers, as well as Aiken County Sheriff's Office deputies, responded to the scene.

The shooting is being investigated by the Aiken County Sheriff's Office and the Aiken County Coroner's Office.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday morning in Newberry.
