Spring is a time for golf tournaments around North Augusta, and one of the longest running will be back once again.

The annual Bolivia Golf Tournament is in its 17th year, and it will return May 18.

The tournament is put on by Grace United Methodist Church and benefits the mission teams.

"Over the years, I have found it very rewarding to see how God is working in the lives of our Bolivian hosts and touching the lives of our team members," Bobby Oliver, who will be on his 11th mission to Bolivia, said.

"It is quite remarkable to go out and work with some of the poorest people on the planet, and to witness the simple joy and love they display despite their difficult lives. It is very humbling when you realize that we don't need all the things we have to make us happy. We only need to have a purpose in life.

"In this case, that is to share what you have and to show the love of Jesus Christ to those we work with."

Grace has been sending teams to Bolivia since 1995, with the first being medical teams.

In 1998, Grace began sending construction teams which now alternate with the medical teams. Oliver said the milestones for this year include the 20th year mission to Bolivia and the 10th construction team.

"This year's construction team will be helping to build a new church high in the Andes in a village called Santa Ana," he said.

"We sent some money for construction materials last fall, so the congregation had a chance to get started before the rainy season. We will work with the local congregation and worship with them while we are there.

"We also will put on a Vacation Bible School for the children in the congregation."

The team will leave July 9.

The annual golf tournament is a best ball format and will be played at Midland Valley Golf Club.

A shotgun start will begin at 12:30 p.m., with check-in and lunch from 11 a.m. to noon.

It is one of the two primary sources of funding for the teams, with the other being a 5K run each fall on the Greeneway.
